Sunday Blogging

Sunday Blogging - Tribe
Sunday Blogging is about everything but Poetry. Recently I have been reading a lot about Tribes across the world and thought of sharing with you too and I have also written a poem inspired by Ishi – the last Native American in Northern Carolina.

Imagine living on your own, in complete silence, always on the run, always fearful, invisible to the world. This is daily life for one solitary man in the Amazon. He’s the sole survivor of his tribe. We don’t know who he is, the name of his tribe or what language he speaks. His people were probably massacred by cattle ranchers who are invading the region at break neck speed.
It’s eery walking through the tiny patch of forest where he lives. His presence is everywhere and one can sense him watching every move.His garden is brimming with produce – paw paw, manioc and corn. He will probably come under cover of night to gather the fruits when they are ripe. It must have taken him days to chop down the trees, single handed, to make the clearing. This is not an isolated incident. This is happening in every part of the world. In Australia is in the mission of eradicating its last tribes. America has successfully removed them from their own soil. Now we see the trend in developing countries. Oil workers and illegal loggers are invading the lands of uncontacted tribes in Peru.
Channel like BBC has committed the mistake of trying to reach uncontacted tribe. A Blank on the Map (1971) is a BBC documentary written, produced, and presented by a young David Attenborough. It records an expedition to make first contact with a tribe of people who live in an area of Central New Guinea thought to be uninhabited.
On the road to the tribe, David being David sheds light on the flora and animals which populate the jungles of Central New Guinea. You can watch/download the video here
http://www.uncontactedtribes.org/
As per Wikipedia Uncontacted peoples, also referred to as isolated peoples or lost tribes, are communities who live, or have lived, either by choice (peoples living in voluntary isolation) or by circumstance, without significant contact with globalised civilization.
Two tribes of the Andaman Islands, belonging to India, have sought to avoid contact with the outside world.
It seemed inconceivable, above all, that the Sentinelese islanders could have survived, living as they did on a remote island directly in the tsunami’s path.
The photo that told the world the Sentinelese had survived the 2004 tsunami.

Yet when a helicopter flew low over the island, a Sentinelese man rushed out on to the beach, aiming his arrow at the pilot in a gesture that clearly said, ‘We don’t want you here’. Alone of the tens of millions of people affected by the disaster, the Sentinelese needed no help from anyone.
Perhaps no people on Earth remain more genuinely isolated than the Sentinelese. They are thought to be directly descended from the first human populations to emerge from Africa, and have probably lived in the Andaman Islands for up to 60,000 years. The fact that their language is so different even from other Andaman islanders suggests that they have had little contact with other people for thousands of years.
This does not mean, however, that they live just as they did 60,000 years ago. Commonly described, for instance, as belonging to the ‘Stone Age’, they do in fact make tools and weapons from metal, which they recover from ships wrecked on the island’s reefs.
The Sentinelese are believed to have lived on their island home for 60,000 years.

Like so many isolated tribal people with a fearsome reputation, the Sentinelese are often inaccurately described as ‘savage’ or ‘backward’. Their hostility to outsiders, though, is easily understandable, for the outside world has brought them little but violence and contempt.
There are various other tribes in the world and we should not contact them and let them have thier own freedom. we have seen in the past how these people are not immune to modern diseases and most of them perished when they were contacted by the whites in Australia and America.
The fight for more land and deforestation would continue and the struggle of these simple tribes across the world would continue. There would be many Ishi who would perish and would get lost in the flow of time.
I will come back with more on this subject. Beast Inside is inspired by the Last Indian Ishi who appeared in North Carolina in the year 1911

Sunday Blogging!

Sunday Blogging! - Gladwell's Magic

Dear Readers,

The book "Rousing Cadence" is taking shape now and i will be submitting the book to the publisher by the end of this month and hope that we should see the book in the market from the beginning of August 2011. I am excited because i have never done something of this sort and I am sure this would be a great experience and once again i would like to thank all the contributors.

If you love Malcolm Gladwell; you should love what you read now. I love his work and this the below is based on one of his book.

We know Bill Joy and we also know Bill Gates. They are the achievers and we can also add many other names. I would put the Beatles here. Around 1969 we saw the 1st personal computer taking shape. Now the challenge is there are few places on earth at that time where you had access to computers where you can TIME SHARE. So to become someone who understand the system and use it in the future you need to be a person who has lot of patience and intellect and systems to practice.

The University of Michigan had one of the most advanced computer system at that time. Bill joy was lucky to be there to test his potential and also had access to free time share which if not have been very costly. After being dropped out of School Bill gates went to LAKESIDE, a private school run by the elites where too they had one of the best Computer System in place which no other schools in the world had. This was free. Bill Gates gave more than 10 -12 hours on weekends and many hours during weekdays. When the time share computer terminal closed down he went to a place called C-CUBED where one of his school friend's teacher worked and gave them free access on weekends and finally when this too got closed down Bill went to the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON which also has installed a Computer where access was free from 3- 6 A.M. Something was happening and both Bill Joy and Bill Gates got access to something which no one at that age had. Now if we look at the number of hours they have practiced it comes to 10,000 hours. What has 10,000 got to do here.

In the world of Canadian Hockey the season starts in the month of January 1. All the top players for the last 30 years were born mostly in the month of Jan, Feb and March and very few in the other months. Think of the reason. This has nothing to do with Zodiac. A very simple phenomenon is playing here. Anyone born in the month of January has the best chance of getting into the team and get selected because of his age advantage. No doubt he needs to be good enough for him to be picked up. However, someone in the month of December would be too young or too old [ for the next year] to be picked up and most of the time missing the bus. Now if we look at the practice hours of this players who were picked up for championship and who undergo special coaching and training they end up doing their 10,000. Karna has done his 10,000 and Tendulkar has done his 10,000. 10,000 is Magical! Mozart too [Read his history]

Let's go back to the BEATLES. They are the best band of all time. They could play everything and any thing. They never started that way. They were a small band from LIVERPOOL. Playing mostly in clubs and there were many similar bands. The Beatle for the most obvious of reason had to go to HAMBURG. Without HAMBURG Beatles would have taken a different path. There is this person from Germany - Hamburg looking for musicians for his club landed in London and met this gentleman [ a business man] from Liverpool. Liverpool happened because of this gentleman and Beatles happened because of Liverpool. But how ? Let's dig. The Beatles ended up traveling to Hamburg five times between 1960 and end of 1962. On the first trip they played 106 nights. Second trip - 92 times , third - 48 times for a total of 176 hours and the last trip for 90 hours. In a span of little more than 1.5 years they performed for 270 nights and in fact this goes to 1270 live performance. Even the best of the musicians of today or in the past have not done 1270 performance in their live time. This made than try new things, new music all the time as they were performing LIVE more or less in the same place and they are required to keep on changing and innovate more to keep the crowd coming. This is their 10,000.

I agree 10,000 is a magical number and to become the best you are required to practice irrespective of knowledge, influence and intellect. I am off to fulfill something which needs lot of practice. Not sure if this could be accomplished as I am starting late. I am sure I will find my 10,000 soon.
What about you?

Finally; A motivational Video!

I thank all the other contributors who believed in me and helped me in this endeavor. The below are the covers shortlisted and we will close on the final cover next Sunday.

As for today's poem; I share with you one of my very old Poem (Reworked) with some changes. The poem talks of bad coming in various avatar over the ages and the changing face of EVIL. It might take some time for you to get into the pulse of the poem as I have used some very old English but let me tell you its worth the effort.

Debauched Medicament
The bacchanal abactor is back again,
To play his game with a beele;
Drives his hunt away to the unknown,
This cacogen is wild and rides like a claviform.
Repudiated by his folks,
He is in folklore’s and limericks;
His heroics though reprehensible,
He lives and is a true fabulist.
Today the fandango has changed,
He no more rushes for the wild;
This concrete jungle has more for him,
There is more in the life of human being.

He sneaks in the darkness,
Drives like a claviform in flight;
To hunt his prey – this time cold blooded,
This brings in dosh, loaded.

His is fatidical and happy with his mactation,
No more in folklore and limericks;
But in the gazetter every day,
Hides in the magnality grottos of today.

He is many faces and many names,
With one mission of obliteration;
His mammonism is immense,
His death brings in more manace.

Cheers and Keep Winning,

Shamsud

Sunday Blogging - Stray Bullet

Sunday Blogging - Stray Bullet
I want to thank each one of you for your mails and comments in my blog. Those simple messages helped me to compile the right book cover and today I am sitting with 30 good poems from 6 different contributors. The hunt for two more poets continues and I am sure I ll find them by the end of the month.  I should have the book published by the 15th of next month.
Anyway I have a new poem for you today. The poem is raw and I have written in one sitting. I will rework on this poem soon. Let m know if you find yourself somewhere in the Poem. After all we are stray bullets and even a stray bullet has its destination.

Stray Bullet
The blank pages of my diary,
Reflects the nothingness of my life;
I am trying hard to create a story out of it,
Every day I promise to strive;
Procrastination though is lovers delight;
Few more moment by the heart’s side.

So I lingered through the darkness in search of light;
Ready for a battle or at least a fight;
Do not give up now,
And wait for some sunrise;
Though we are derailed at times,
Hit the road again and surprise!
There may be some time left to redefine this life.

I can blame the entire world today,
I can even forge a story;
But when I look at the mirror,
It’s always me behind the light;
One man whom I need to delight,
It was me behind that fall and during my rise.

I am not done yet,
Nights are always meant to fight;
But day light can take me to soaring height,
One man from who I cannot hide;
And separate the wrong from the right,
Even in darkness and blinding light,
In burning deserts and frost bites;
Someone inside wants me to fight and be brave;
‘cause we follow ourselves to the ultimate grave.

Sunday Blogging

Sunday Blogging
This was one of the best weeks in recent time. I am extremely delighted to start my new topic “The Chosen One’ and you will see many Authors and Writers introduced to you through this Saturday Topic.
Secondly I have recently started receiving few works from various writers as contributors to my new book. For those who are reading this for the first time you can refer here – Sunday Blogging- Sunday, April 15, 2012

For others who are still waiting to send their work; please send them at shamsud.ahmed@gmail.com. I have shortlisted 5 writers as of now and have replied to them with details of the work. I also have few foreign writers who are willing to contribute and would include some of their work too.

This week also saw two of my work being reviewed and I am extremely happy with the feedback:

Review on my book – Absquatulate
I came across this book by accident, but boy, was I pleasantly surprised.
First of all, I was surprised by an Indian writing about nature in a way the west writes nature poetry. Sub-continental poetry tends to be about love and emotions of sense of being, rather than about recollections in tranquility.
He IS Romantic:
A fancy has no boundary;
Should I sneak into your heart?
And write my name with light;
Absquatulate (MysticVerse)
Should I seal it before the day break?
I don't want to get late,
Should it take its own course instead?

However,what differentiates his poetry purely from being romantic is his expert use of nature.A poem about nearness and affection is followed by one about the rise of the sun,or the fall of night,both working in harmonious conjunction with each other.Here is an example of nature working in conjunction with affectionate emotion.It is called 'Doggerel':
My sunshine vanished in the cloud,
And the moon cleverly hides you in its shadow;
Whom should I blame?
You blamed it on the sun.
I love the way Shamsud combines the human with the natural.As a result of reading this book,I am willing to risk my money on his other works which I am going to download after this review.I thoroughly enjoyed it, I think those who like to read about the combination of the human with the natural should also love it.
One minor niggle is that there are one of two glaring typos that need to be corrected.As I said, they won't stop me from buying his other books but others it may deter...BRAVO and best of luck with all your future endeavours Shamsud.
As a writer of poetry myself I know how difficult it is to write what he is writing...and once again, i wish him the best of luck:

The opening of FALLEN STAR mentions that Shamsud Ahmed delivers "equal parts love and mystery, adventure and romance," in his poetry book.

Even though the collection is quite concise (about 32 print pages), the scope of the poems is indeed full-ranging. Reading can be a very subjective and personal experience (especially when it comes to poetry and/or "thoughtful prose")--one of the poems that I really enjoyed in this collection is the one titled "Existence."
Fallen Star: Shamsud Ahmed (Volume 1)
I'm not going to include that poem in its entirety here, but I'll say that the poem sums up the theme in 5 paragraphs very nicely.

Some of the poems are a little bit "rough around the edges," though to me this added to their charm and originality. I've always liked reading and writing, and I greatly appreciate it when a writer or poet is willing to leave things a little bit raw so as to capture a moment or emotion more honestly and sincerely. This, of course, is different from just plain lazy or sloppy writing (where there's often zero thought or concern for the emotional nuances or intricacies involved with choice of wording, or style).

The poem titled "Dance" had a really nice rhythm to it, and "Moribund" and "Personified!" feature great description. "A Pinch" features the following line: "A pinch of struggle for a pinch of win," which I thought was both witty and playful/insightful. I liked the choice of poem to end off the collection too. I will not say what it is here to prevent any spoilers ;)

I would have liked the author bio at the end to have been a little bit longer, so that we could view a little bit more of the mind and personality behind the poetry! That being said, perhaps Mr. Shamsud Ahmed prefers to let the poetry do the talking for him (re: his bio and experiences). I look forward to the poems and stories Shamsud will have to tell, whether inspired by the past, present or future.
Debauched Medicament

As visitors to my Blog I would have more than happy to share a copy of one of my book you. Simply drop an email I will send a copy of my book. However, one of my books Debauched Medicament can be downloaded free for the next 2 days from Amazon. Please take the advantage and if you like the book; please do leave a review.

Cheers and Keep Winning,

Sunday Blogging

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right.. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it.
David J. Pollay

After lot of pressure, finally i wrote this song for one of my friend. This is WIP and would take some time to complete

du bist schön
Déjenme decirles mi nombre,
You enchant me oh Bonita,
You make me feel so young
du bist schön…
du bist schön….

Let me tell you my name oh beauty,
Let me die in your arm,
Tell me if I have gone wrong
du bist schön…
du bist schön…

Today is always beautiful when you become my day,
Every today I will make love with you,
Dance with you and play your song,
du bist schön…
du bist schön…

Déjenme decirles mi nombre,
You enchant me oh Bonita,
You make me feel so young
du bist schön…
du bist schön….
du bist schön…
du bist schön…
du bist schön…
du bist schön…

You make my living so easy,
Your thoughts sometimes make me dizzy,
Without you I am all alone,
du bist schön…
du bist schön….

Déjenme decirles mi nombre,
You enchant me oh Bonita,
You make me feel so young
du bist schön…
du bist schön….

Déjenme decirles mi nombre,
du bist schön…
You enchant me oh Bonita,
du bist schön…
You make me feel so young
du bist schön…

Sunday Blogging - Business As Usual

Sunday Blogging
I am inspired. I am motivated to write. Recently one of my friends who runs a theatre company asked me to write something for me and I went back and submitted few of my stories. The good news is he accepted those stories and soon would go into production. Now I am planning to write something (actually anything) on this blog and would hope my readers would like them.  I will call this Sunday Blogging because on all other days I will concentrate on Poems/poetry only. So here we go. I will continue with this topic depending on feedback. All my subject would remain close to my Blog theme - We all get dirty at times and needs some cleansing ( I am dirty; I need washing)

 Business as usual
18:00 Hrs

I have made it a habit of taking a 15 minutes break at this hour. My colleague would join me to the Irani Tea Shop behind the office in Malad West. We do have a Canteen in the 5th floor just outside my work floor but we prefer to take a long walk to the Irani Tea Shop which also becomes a temporary getaway from the busy mundane activities in the office. All 3 of us have made it a habit for the last 6 months and I remember there are times when I had postponed client calls at that hour to ensure we do not miss that 15 minutes.

Today we are also joined by a new manager who joined us 3 days back and though he is not happy to leave the AC in this Mumbai Summer he had to walk through the parking lot and than through the garden to the main road where the Tea Shop lies. We take this road because it saves at least 4 minutes which is great considering the break is not more than 15 minutes and at times we stretch by another 5 or 6 minutes. We took our Cups and started our usual discussions on varied topics forgetting the 1st half of the day which would also give us the energy for the next half.

Today is little different; though the crowd is usual there is some restlessness among the shopkeepers and the owner of all the illegal makeshift Dosa, Idli, Sandwich Maker and so one. Being a new addition to the Mumbai Crowd I find it amazing when my colleague informed me that the person in the cycle selling Idli makes more than 2000 Rupee per day; however, he hardly takes home 700-800 after paying to the local police and other expenses. It is hard to believe that a cycle carrying few cylindrical tubes and pots makes so much money when in my place back in Assam; a proper shop in prominent locality struggles to make that much . Few of the shopkeepers who were occupying a major part of the road now vanished behind the permanent shops located in the corner. The team of Panipuri vendors disappeared in 5 minutes and I also saw few of the helpers from the already shut shops providing support and help to the people with bigger stalls and larger utensils. The Tea shop however is permanent and is not involved in any of these activities. We normally stand by the road side to drink our tea and these also give us some freedom to breath in the already packed tea shop. My Colleague informed me that some sort of Police raid is going to happen and hence the commotion. I have been coming to this place for a long time and notice the Police Van everyday. I am not sure why they are doing it today; what prompted them?

Anyway after the clean up job done by the shop owners and their helpers I saw something which I could not have imagined with all those tents and make shit roofs smearing the visibility beyond 30 meters. The road is now broad and the traffic is flowing smoothly. I am not sure of the fate of the makeshift shops from tomorrow and felt bad about the future of the owners and their family. However I also feel that the law should not be taken for granted and if they are facing such problem this is their fault. There is no hubbub today in the street and without the traffic Jam the area looks better and there is less pollution. Millions of litres of Gasoline might has been wasted up due to the traffic Jam created in this part of Malad because few of the haughty shopkeepers thought that they can make better use of the Government.

The Police Van came with more number of cops than usual. There was a huge truck following the Police Van and the driver parked the truck in the parking lot beside the Tea shop which till few minutes back was occupied by more than ten nondescript makeshift stalls and kiosk selling various food items. Few young but strong men got down form the truck and picked up few of the items lying on the road which the owners and helpers could not manage to carry. Pieces of Broken chairs and tables, few utensils, buckets and a large drum which use to store water were among the more prominent things that were stuffed in the waiting truck.

One of the Police man entered something in his log book and they left in 20 minutes. “If they could do this week at least Mumbai would be much cleaner city” I thought.
All three of us are happy today as I told them that going forward we can get my car for the evening tea which would save more time or rather give us more time to enjoy our evening tea and talks. The new manager felt relieved because of my proposal. With the parking lot visible now I somehow imagined my car parked in the area where the huge truck was parked. We went back happy thinking that and also ended up discussing the changing mindset of modern Indian and how corruptions and other such things are coming to the lime light and even the PM is not spared these days.

“We are working in the true spirit and principal of democracy and our children would definitely have a better future” one of the managers said.

“With corruption coming down I think our Income Tax which falls among the highest in the world should be cut down to half as more than half of our income goes to the politicians pocket which get stacked in some Swiss Bank which only the WIKI guys knows” the other grumbled.

We have reached the 5th floor of our building and time to move to our respective cubicle and get busy with our 2nd half of the day. “Business as usual” here.

18:00 Hrs

A new day and a new evening and today will be a better one. We will have more time to spend; less commotion and maybe we will have our tea at my car today as that way we can keep the AC on and enjoy our tea too. I smiled at this thought.

We took the main road leading to the tea shop as the short cut can be taken only on foot. I was finding it difficult to move ahead because of the long traffic jam and the irritating honking was unavoidable and is adding to the affliction.

“Some accident; maybe” one of the managers said casually.
“Yes…possible; there is no other reason for a traffic jam with the vendors out”
“Accidents never happens everyday and today is an exception; we will have better days going ahead” I said.

We waited and have already wasted 10 minutes from our break and have not even moved 10 meters.

After struggling for 10 more minutes and taking the turn to the tea shop I tried moving my car to the parking area beside the coffee shop; but I could not. I have not noticed the vendors who are back and this time occupying more area of the street.

It’s Business as usual in this law fearing land.
